Ensuring Your Safety: Exploring Fire-Rated Digital Door Locks

A fire door is a door with a fire-resistance rating used as part of a passive fire protection system to reduce the spread of fire and smoke. With effect from 1 March 2024, if you wish to install a digital door lock on a fire-rated door in Singapore, it is required for it to be a fire-rated digital door lock. It’s crucial to ensure that any digital door lock installed on a fire-rated door meets the necessary fire-resistance standards set by authorities.

In Singapore, fire safety regulations regarding fire-rated doors are governed by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The rules for fire-rated doors typically include requirements for:

  1. Fire resistance: Fire-rated doors must be able to withstand fire for a specified period, which is usually measured in minutes (e.g. 30 minutes, 60 minutes, etc.).

  2. Materials and construction: Fire-rated doors must be constructed using materials and designs that meet specific fire resistance standards and have been tested and certified by authorized agencies.

  3. Installation: Fire-rated doors must be installed correctly according to manufacturer specifications and relevant building codes to ensure their effectiveness in containing fire and smoke.

  4. Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance of fire-rated doors are required to ensure that they remain in good working condition and continue to provide effective fire protection.

  5. Labeling and certification: Fire-rated doors should be labeled with their fire resistance rating and certification marks to indicate compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Philips Easykey fire-rated locks* are certified to withstand 60-minutes of fire with mechanical fail-safe feature (so that you can still unlock the digital door lock to leave the house, even if the battery dies).
